about

The Kennet Sheiks were formed, as a duo, in 1992 by Dave Temple (guitars and vocals), and Stuart Cumberpatch (slide and hawaiian steel guitars and harmonica). A short time later the duo became a quartet when joined by Steve Hill (piano and accordion) and Dominic Geraghty (bass). The band played an eclectic mix of Delta Blues, Hokum, Western Swing and early Hawaiian classics.
In 1993, the Sheiks secured a weekly gig at The Dove on Orts Road, Reading. This gig became a byword for great nights each Wednesday and continued unabated until 2000.
Many guest players were showcased including UK maestro of the steel guitar, Michael Messer, Roger Hubbard, Rag Mamma Rag, Ray Stubbs and a number of visiting U.S. based players like Jesse Taylor, Steve James, Kent Duchaine and Micheal Roach.
The Kennet Sheiks CD was recorded 'live in the studio' in the early summer of 1996 and features the band plus guest players Michael Messer (slide guitars) and 'Hula' Steve Thorburn (washboard).
Sadly, the band folded when Dave Temple 'retired' to South West France, where, today he is active in the local blues scene as a solo performer and with his 'scratch band' 'Los Paranoias'.
Stuart is still active as a slide player of renown.
